BBC Switches off Desktop website

The desktop only version of the BBC News website has been replaced with their newer, responsive designed website. Whilst the BBC’s responsive website has been available for some time this was an optional change for desktop users, however as of today the old desktop version of the site has been removed and all users will now have to use their fully responsive website.

On the BBC’s article regarding the change over Robin Pembrooke, the BBC’s head of product for the News and Weather sites is quoted as saying,  “We now see 65% of our visitors to the website are on mobile or tablet devices, The old site that we had, which is now four-plus years old, was really designed with PCs in mind. Moving to a fully responsive solution which works across mobile, tablets and desktops is the way to go. It means that we can have one solution that is a web solution for all of our users.”

The move to change over their website to the fully responsive site comes just a few weeks after Google’s announcement that mobile searches will favour mobile friendly websites over those that only cater for a desktop experience.

Another interesting part of this BBC announcement is at the bottom of the BBC article there a timeline showing all the various designs that the BBC news website has had throughout the years, which shows how organic the design changes have been on their site.
